Thursday March 16th (actual)
Actually left Seattle at say 1 pm after R took final exam and went for interview at the VA and I made a bike ride to Uncle Ike’s. There was an attempt to immediately stick me in the back seat which I found punitive and created a fuss which at least landed me in the front passenger seat.
It was a fine sunny day and off we went to I-90 and Ellensburg where I must have been given the wheel for I recall setting the trip odometer to zero. Down the Yakima Canyon to Yakima and cheap gas at Toppenish and a poor guy coming to the pump asking for change.
Thence to 97 and eventually across the Columbia (the mighty one) to a side trip easterly to Antelope which is one of the old west near ghost towns that are quiet and rather appealing. A group of youths were shooting baskets in front of the old green school. Every other building was an original of unpainted and therefore intensely weathered wood tipping one way or the other.
Finally landed in Madras as the sun set and made a home at the Chateau Econolodge. Had a glass at the Mazatland (a vast space that had seen better days) high above the lit little city. Spent a long and fruitless time looking for the lost thing of the day. I got the big bed.
